Unleashing the Power of Coaching: A Nutrition Provider's Guide to Helping Clients Get Unstuck
Meg Bowman MS CNS LDN CHES
As a nutrition provider who has ventured into the world of health coaching, I have experienced firsthand the transformative impact of supporting clients on their wellness journey. I’ve also had my fair share of clients that struggle with behavior change, in short, they are stuck! Join me as we uncover practical strategies utilizing a coaching model to guide our clients towards breakthroughs and success.
Picture this: you've carefully crafted a personalized nutrition plan for your client, brimming with balanced meals and achievable goals. Yet, despite their initial enthusiasm, they encounter obstacles and keep coming back to session having done zilch. It's a common challenge in the realm of nutrition counseling, but fear not, for this is where your health coach training becomes a beacon of light. Armed with a toolkit of strategies and techniques, you can help your clients navigate the twists and turns on their wellness journey. How? I’d be delighted to let you in on what’s worked for me:
Active Listening and Empathy: One of the fundamental pillars of health coaching is active listening and empathy. When clients feel stuck, it's essential to create a safe and supportive space for them to express their challenges and emotions. By genuinely listening, acknowledging their struggles, and validating their feelings, you establish a strong foundation of trust. And at the same time, you’re actually uncovering the ROOT CAUSE of their stuckness! Let's imagine a client who is struggling to adhere to their nutrition goals due to a busy work schedule.
“By genuinely listening . . . you’re actually uncovering the ROOT CAUSE of their stuckness!”
Instead of dismissing their concerns or simply providing solutions, practice active listening and empathy. Let them express their frustrations and share their experiences juggling work demands and healthy eating. Once you have established a strong rapport and understanding, it's time to delve deeper into the client's situation and explore the root cause of their stuckness. Ask open-ended questions to encourage self-reflection and insight. For example, you could ask, "How does your work schedule impact your ability to prioritize healthy eating?" or "What specific challenges do you face when it comes to incorporating nutritious meals into your busy day?"
By allowing the client to reflect on their situation, you empower them to uncover their own barriers and potential solutions. This self-discovery process often leads to a shift in perspective and opens the door for personal growth and behavior change.
Goal Reframing and Mindset Shifts: Another powerful technique in helping clients get unstuck is to assist them in reframing their goals and shifting their mindset. Often, clients get stuck because they have set rigid expectations or are overly focused on specific outcomes - they find they can’t do ANYTHING because what they CAN do isn’t good enough. Sure, maybe adding a single glass of water a day feels a little anticlimactic, but honestly, that’s an important shift and a start towards better health, so let’s celebrate our wins where we find them!
Coach training equips us with the tools to guide clients through the challenges of behavior change. Active listening and empathy create a safe space for clients to express their struggles and discover the root causes of their stuckness. By understanding their unique circumstances, we can tailor our guidance to address their specific barriers.
Moreover, the power of goal reframing and mindset shifts cannot be underestimated. Sometimes, clients become fixated on rigid expectations, hindering their progress. Using a coaching model,, we can help them redefine success and celebrate even the smallest victories, fostering a positive and empowering mindset.
